Rosemount senior Conner Yepsen joined elite company after scoring five goals in a 16-6 win over Mahtomedi on Saturday.

The midfielder, a Robert Morris-commit, now has now scored 100 goals in his career, joining his twin brother and fellow Colonials commit Carter Yespen in the century club

“(It feels) pretty good,” Conner Yespen said of reaching the 100-goal mark. “My brother and a couple other kids on the team got there (last year), so I was hoping I’d get there this year.”

It didn’t take him long.

Third-ranked Rosemount (2-0) cruised to an easy victory over Mahtomedi (0-1) in the Irish’s home-opener, with Yespen scoring his 100th career goal unassisted with 2:39 left in the third quarter thanks to some sweet fakes and his speed.

“He’s one of the fastest guys on our team,” Rosemount coach Lance Kuehn said. “His stick skills have gotten sharper and sharper, and he’s just developed such a rocket of a shot with pinpoint accuracy.”

Yespen has groomed his skills over the course of five years of varsity hockey, and Kuehn noted that the senior has been playing like a college player the last two years thanks to his early start in the varsity ranks.

The maturity began to show last year, as Yespen recorded 37 goals for the Irish, who lost to Eagan in the Section 3 semifinals. It appears the converted midfielder (Yespen used to play on the attack) has picked up right where he left off in 2013.

Conner took pictures with his parents, coaches and brother Carter after the game with 100 up on the scoreboard at Irish Stadium. Kuehn said he would’ve liked to have better weather for such an occasion, but he’s happy that Yespen is finally in the century club.

“It’s really exciting for Conner to get 100 goals,” Kuehn said. “Not many players in Minnesota (lacrosse) history ever get 100. Not many players play five years of varsity lacrosse. We knew he wasn’t going to get it in (the first) game, but we knew today would be the day.”
