Armstrong built a four-goal lead in the first half against undefeated Apple Valley. Turns out Armstrong was playing to the Eagles’ strengths.

“We usually do better when we get down, because that’s when we pick it up and start fighting,” Katie Larson, Apple Valley senior midfielder, said after the 5-3 victory.

Eighth-grader Reagan Roelofs scored the winning goal. But it was Larson who kept the No. 3-seed Eagles (17-0) aloft. Larson, the state’s leader with 87 goals, tallied four — including three consecutive in the second half.

Armstrong’s Hayley Holdahl and Mari Verbeten each scored three goals.
