Lakeville South knows how to make the most of a weather delay.

After Friday’s Section 1 semifinal was delayed twice at halftime because of lightning, the Cougars could be heard whooping and hollering in their locker room.

“We were all just in there having fun and staying positive,” sophomore midfielder Abby Schaefer said. “We had music going, we were excited."

Having a 10-goal lead also helps alleviate the boredom of a delay.

The Cougars scored seven unanswered goals to start the game and took an 11-1 lead into the halftime break, then scored another eight goals to earn the win 19-3 over Northfield.

Schaefer finished with three goals, and admitted that staying on task during a rout can prove difficult.

“It’s a little hard to stay focused and keep playing like we do every game,” Schaefer said.

Senior forward Chloe Crosby scored a game-high five goals, and has embraced the role of leading scorer after the Cougars graduated All-State players Logan Halvorson and Maddy Canney.

Halvorson was also named the 2015 Minnesota Girls’ Lacrosse Coaches Association Player of the Year after racking up 78 goals and 100 points, and Canney finished with 75 goals and 103 points.

“(Crosby) took a lot more on herself than she really needed to,” Lakeville South coach Patrick Crandall said. “She’s started to really own (her role), and she’s stepping up really well,” Crandall said.

Crosby racked up 43 goals and 58 points in 13 regular season games, but says she’s not the only weapon in the Cougars’ arsenal.

“There’s a lot of girls other than me that can score,” Crosby said. “Our whole team is capable of (scoring) too.”

Despite the losses of Canney and Halvorson from last year’s state runner-up team, Crosby says that she’s just as confident in this year’s group.

“I think we’re just as good,” Crosby said.
