Academy of Holy Angels at Breck
7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 25

Breck begins its season with a gauntlet of games, including two against teams that reached the state tournament last year.

Academy of Holy Angels is the Mustangs' opponent on Thursday, followed by a game with defending Class 1A champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Saturday.

The Mustangs finished with a 9-8-1 mark a season ago after falling to the Red Knights 3-0 in the Class 1A, Section 5 championship, and they look to start the season strong against the Stars behind a roster that graduated just one player.

Holy Angels is coming off its first Class 1A state tournament appearance since 2008, when it finished as the runner-up. The Stars will be looking for another deep postseason run, but have some holes to fill after the graduation of standouts Mara Flaherty, Brooke Innes, Gabi Reynolds and Emma O’Brien.

Goalkeeper Liz Zender returns to anchor the defense.
