No. 2-ranked Eastview boys, No. 1 Eden Prairie girls get top seeds

South Suburban Conference co-champion Eastview, No. 2 in the final state rankings, received the top seed and will play No. 4 seed Edina in the Minnesota State High School League boys state tournament semifinals at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5, at Chanhassen High School.

No. 2 seed Totino-Grace and No. 3 Eden Prairie meet at 8 p.m. in the second semifinal.

The championship game is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the third-place game for 6 p.m. on Thursday, also at Chanhassen High School.

The Lightning (14-1) have the best record of any of the four state tournament entrants and are coming off an 8-7 victory over No. 4-ranked Eagan in Friday’s Section 3 championship game.

Eastview finished as runner-up at the 2009 state tournament, losing to Minnetonka 12-10 in the title game. Eastview also reached the state tournament in 2007 and 2008. The Lightning’s four state tournament appearances ties Eden Prairie as the most in the event’s history.

Edina (7-9-1) upended two-time defending state champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the semifinals and longtime state powerhouse Blake in the championship en route to the Section 5 title. The unranked Hornets, making their first state tournament appearance, have wins in the postseason (four) than they had in the regular season (three).

Unranked Totino-Grace (13-3) is making its second state tournament appearance. The Eagles lost to Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the 2010 title game.

No. 5-ranked Eden Prairie made previous state tournament appearances in 2007, 2008 and 2011, finishing second each time.

Girls state tournament

No. 1 seed Eden Prairie (16-0) and No. 2 seed Blake (14-2) have met in the championship game of all five previous Minnesota State High School League sanctioned girls state tournaments, and a sixth-straight meeting remains a possibility as the No. 1-ranked Eagles and No. 2-ranked Bears have been placed in opposite brackets for this year’s event.

Eden Prairie, which beat Blake 14-8 on May 18 in the final regular season game for both teams, opens state tournament play at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, at Chanhassen High School against No. 4 seed Apple Valley (13-4).

Blake plays Stillwater (14-2) in the 8 p.m. semifinal.

Stillwater is No. 6 in the final state rankings. The Ponies made their first state tournament appearance last year, finihsing fourth. Apple Valley is unranked and making its first state tournament appearance.

The championship and third-place games are scheduled for either 2 or 4 p.m. on June 7, also at Chanhassen High School.
