Lakeville North suffered two one-goal losses during the regular season, neither of which sat well with the team. It picked an opportune time to avenge one of those setbacks.

The Panthers used their team speed to attack Burnsville quickly in a 16-12 victory in the quarterfinals of the girls’ lacrosse state tournament on Tuesday at Chanhassen High School.

The Blaze (14-2) had edged Lakeville North 11-10 midway through the season.

Junior Kacie Waagbo scored four of her six goals in the first half Tuesday, helping the Panthers (13-4) race to a 12-6 lead against the defenseless Blaze.

Lakeville North countered with a goal after each of Burnsville’s first five goals.
Burnsville closed to within 13-10 with less than nine minutes remaining. Lakeville North countered with the next three goals to foil the comeback bid.

Eden Prairie 18, Champlin Park 0

The struggles for the Northwest Suburban Conference continued in the third quarterfinals game of the girls’ lacrosse state tournament.

It only took the top-ranked Eagles 32 seconds to get on the scoreboard, and the onslaught was underway in the biggest mismatch of the quarterfinals. Eden Prairie dominated Champlin Park in an 18-0 victory in the quarterfinals.

Eden Prairie (15-1) had six players score in the first seven minutes while building a quick 7-0 lead. Senior midfielder Emma Claire Fontenot scored twice during that span.

The Eagles wound up with nine players scoring in the first half while building a 13-0 lead. They added five more goals in the second half.

Blake 15, Armstrong 5

Three-time defending state champion Blake looked like it took offense to being seeded No. 2.

The Bears (14-3) turned in another dominating performance against Armstrong (14-2), scoring the game’s first four goals in the opening five minutes en route to a 15-5 quarterfinal victory.

Blake junior standout Lydia Sutton had four goals in the first half when the Bears built a 10-1 lead. Four other Blake players scored two goals in the game.

The Falcons were also making their first state tournament appearance like Elk River/Zimmerman. Both teams are out of the Northwest Suburban Conference.

Blake defeated Armstrong 18-5 in the opening game of the season.

Stillwater 17, Elk River/Zimmerman 8

The experience Stillwater gained from its previous two lacrose state tournament appearances in 2011 and 2012 was evident from the outset Tuesday against inexperienced Elk River/Zimmerman.

The Ponies (15-2) scored 10 consecutive goals in the first half, and cruised into the semifinals with a 17-8 victory over Elk River/Zimmerman in the first quarterfinal game the girls’ lacrosse state tournament at Chanhassen High School. The overwhelmed Elks (13-4) were making their first state tournament trip.

Junior Katherine Sheely and sophomore Carter Sanderson each had a hat trick in the first half as the Ponies built a 13-2 lead. Sanderson finished with five goals and Sheely had four.

Stillwater will face the Armstrong-Blake winner on Thursday. Defending state champion Blake beat the Ponies 17-10 in the semifinals a year ago.
