April 21: Surging Wayzata tests its strength against defending champion Eden Prairie

Eden Prairie didn't figure to be invincible entering the season, but let's just say a second straight unbeaten run to a championship wasn't out of the question.

Then the Eagles played Benilde-St. Margaret's on April 15 to open their season. And lost.

The Red Knight's 8-7 triumph over Eden Prairie in the easily was the most surprising outcome so far in the young season. It's dangerous to read too much into early season games, however, and Eden Prairie righted itself quickly with a 16-2 drubbing of Edina on April 17.

Wayzata, meanwhile, was almost flawless in a 14-1 rout of Orono on April 14 in an outcome that was stunningly lopsided. The Trojans followed that victory with another dominating showing, this team beating Minnetonka 9-3 on April 17.

Just how good, or vulnerable, are these teams? As it just so happens, the consensus top five-ranked squads meet on Monday in a huge Lake Conference showdown at Wayzata High School.
