A look at the Cougars senior:

Maddy Canney

Canney is the Cougars’ second-leading scorer. She helped them to a 16-0 regular season and state tournament berth. Here is a closer look at Canney:

Q: What is the best movie you’ve seen in the last year?

A: “Gone Girl.”

Q: Three words your friends and teammates would use to describe you are …

A: … loud, outgoing and energetic.

Q: At your first varsity practice, you felt …

A: … intimidated by all of the older girls, and very inexperienced.

Q: You know you have an edge on an opponent when …

A: I can see the defender’s ponytail.

Q: What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete?

A: Qualifying for the girls’ lacrosse state tournament two consecutive years.

Q: Name one sport that you wish you could play, and why?

A: Tennis. I think it’s an underrated sport. I’m pretty bad at it, though.

Q: If you could change one thing about high school sports, what would it be?

A: I wish that there wasn’t recruiting. High school kids change schools to play a sport for a better team, and I think that’s ridiculous. Every kid should have a little pride, and play for their own team.

Q: Who is your favorite college or pro sports team and why?

A: The University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team. They’re the best in the nation and watching them makes me want to improve.

Q: In 10 years, you hope you’re …

A: … married, living somewhere other than Minnesota and coaching a college team.

Q: What is the best sports advice you ever received?

A: What you put into it is what you get out of it. The harder you work, the better the results.
