Before the whistle even blows to start a game at Edina’s Kuhlman Stadium, the Hornet girls’ lacrosse team will have already made themselves heard loud and clear.

The pregame warmup mix at the Hornets’ home field has a song that features a lyrical cameo by head coach Makenna Borg, a variance on the surprise that then-junior Anna Klein pulled over on her teammates last season.

“No one else knew about it,” Borg said with a laugh on Friday night, admitting that senior captain Olivia Kilberg was the only player in on the joke this season. We recorded with her, so that will be on the mix for the whole year.”

On Friday, the musical stylings of Borg and Co. preceded a thrilling 11-8 victory for Edina, as the Hornets edged perennial state tournament fixture Stillwater on the rain-slicked turf.

Spearheading the offensive attack for the Hornets was eighth-grader Haley Reeck, who racked up five goals and added an assist in the win.

“I think we always knew she had it in her,” senior captain Anna Klein said of Reeck, who scored 11 goals as a seventh-grader last season.

“This year it’s really showing, and it’s awesome because obviously it’s helping our team a lot,” Klein added.

Reeck attributed her comfort level with the team to the good vibes attitude of the Edina roster.

“I’ve gotten to love everyone and they’re so positive,” Reeck said. “That makes me positive and better.”

Sonya Miller added two goals for the Hornets, who are ranked No. 7 in the state coaches’ association poll.

Klein, Loli Fidler, Katie Ware and Sophia Doll each chipped in a goal for Edina (1-0).

Gina Jablonski was the bright spot in the loss for the Pones (0-1), scoring three goals.

Reeck’s five-goal outburst may have been a surprise on paper, but Borg said that she wasn’t at all taken aback by the numbers.

"I'd seen her play this summer and I knew she'd be a huge contributor for us," Borg said. "I think that's just a preview of what's to come this year."

The Hornets, ranked No. 7 in the state coaches’ association poll, jumped out to a 8-3 lead after one half, spurred by four of Reeck’s goals and one tally each from Anna Klein, Katie Ware, Sophia Doll and Sonya Miller.

Loli Fidler, Reeck and Miller would each score in the second half for the Hornets (1-0).

Despite scoring give of the first six goals in the second half, No. 3 Stillwater was unable to tie the game and drops to 0-1. Gina Jablonski led the Ponies with three goals.
