During the first five minutes of Wednesday’s game, it seemed as though the Champlin Park and Blaine girls’ lacrosse teams were simply moving to keep the blood flowing underneath a gray sky and less-than-tropical spring showers.

The opening minutes of the game remained scoreless despite all the movement from both sides, an anomaly considering the squads combined for 43 goals in two games last season.

“We were just trying to stay warm, running around with our heads cut off,” Blaine junior Abby Jones said with a laugh. “But (we finally) set it up and we got it going.”

Jones has plenty of reason to smile after the game, as she recorded six goals against the Rebels, including the game-winner at the 3:55 mark of overtime.

“Abby’s our leader now and she’s our go-to girl,” Blaine coach Dennis Osbeck said. “We had a play set and it worked.”

Gina Rosvold and Ava Engler each scored twice in the win for the Bengals (3-0, 3-0).

Champlin Park (4-1, 4-1) jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first half, buoyed by a pair of goals from senior Sam Nolan, who would finish the game with three goals and two assists.

Nolan’s current season total of 19 goals is currently tied for fourth in the state.

Blaine ended Champlin Park’s season in 2016 with a 15-9 win in the Section 7 semifinals behind a nine-goal performance from Jones, so her six-goal haul on Wednesday was really a testament to the Rebels’ defence.

“Defenses (on) both sides did an awesome job, (and) goalies came up big too,” Osbeck said.
