Chanhassen coach Rachel Aiken can’t help but peer into the playing future of Storm freshman Ellie Wagner.

After Tuesday night, no one can blame Aiken for doing so.

Wagner scored four goals to lead Chanhassen to a 17-7 victory over Metro West Conference foe Benilde-St. Margaret’s, a small taste of what the sure-handed midfielder can provide the Storm throughout her career.

“I can’t wait to see where she goes,” Aiken added.

For the first 25 minutes of Tuesday night’s game, it appeared as though the only place Wagner would be going was up and down the middle of the field as the Storm tried to fend off the Red Knights, who were mounting an admirable comeback in the face of a 6-2 deficit.

Relying on its speed, Benilde-St. Margaret's (4-4, 2-2) scored three unanswered goals to pull within 6-5. Aiken said the Red Knights' success was due in part to their solid coaching staff. She urged her team to stay calm and play its game, and as a result, Chanhassen potted a pair of tallies to enter halftime leading 8-5.

“They fought back and took care of it,” Aiken said.

The Storm (6-1, 3-0) also amped up their intensity in the second frame, Wagner said. The result was a 9-2 run that put the game away.

“In the second half we turned it around and started going for the ground balls more, hustling a bit more,” added Wagner, who scored three of her four goals after halftime.

Wagner understands her role on the team, which is why she's become a a key player, Aiken said.

“She listens, she’s really coachable, and she’s only going to get better."

Junior midfielders Regan Juve and Rowan Hodgins each scored three times for the Storm, ranked No. 7 in the coaches' poll. Senior forward Erica Peterson dished out four assists in the win.

“I love getting assists,” said Peterson, also the team’s leading scorer with 20 goals. “Sometimes it’s more fun that getting goals."

Peterson also said Wagner’s standout performance is just a precursor.

“I’ve been there. I know what it’s fun to score at such a young age,” Peterson said with a grin.

“It’s awesome to see her scoring, because she’ll have a lot (more goals) coming up.”
