No excuses. That was Park of Cottage Grove’s motto coming into the game.

After the final horn, Park coach Greg Rinzel pumped his fist as the Wolfpack flooded the field at White Bear Lake’s south campus.

“This one we took,” Rinzel said at the post-game huddle, igniting high-pitched hollers. “We came to their field, their home, and we took it. No excuses tonight.”

Park of Cottage Grove junior Matt Moreland stole more than one thing from White Bear Lake, netting two scores in the third quarter to recover from a 3-1 deficit. The Wolfpack (10-3, 7-1) topped the Bears 11-6, ending White Bear Lake’s eight-game winning streak.

White Bear Lake (9-4, 7-1), has won the Suburban East title four times in the last six years. Now, they’ll have to share it.

Moreland sparked the momentum which caught fire after senior Daniel Beck netted a goal just two minutes later to give Park a 4-3 lead they would never relinquish.

Moreland said he was just doing his job, admitting that he had a good game and stepped up to the plate. But next game, it might have to be someone else.

Junior Grant Glazier celebrated a personal milestone, netting two goals, which broke his own school record with 70 points on the season. He set the first record of 68 points his freshman year. But Glazier was more proud of Moreland’s performance.

The teammates are neighbors and they’ve played together for six years. Glazier watches him put in extra hours of practice in his backyard at night.

“The kid improves more and more each game,” Glazier said.

Also impressive was junior goalie Zakk Morse, who has a .647 save percentage on the season, even though he started playing goaltender for the first time only two years ago.

“He doesn’t feel pain. It’s crazy,” Glazier said.

Rinzel was expecting the Wolfpack to win tonight after a tough loss against Stillwater on May 11, when they were down five starters due to injuries.

“Not that injuries are an excuse,” Rinzel said.

Against the Bears, however, the Wolfpack was back on track with only one starting player injured.

White Bear Lake senior Jack McKeague scored two goals with one assist. Also scoring for the Bears were juniors Jared Lueck, Kyle Preslaski, Jace Goudreau and senior Jacob Leclair. The Bears were missing four starters due to injury, but coach Brandon Husack isn’t hanging his head.

“It’s good to get a loss like this to open our eyes,” he said.

Husack is proud that White Bear Lake still hovers over the Suburban East Conference by sharing the league title with Park of Cottage Grove.

First Report

Park of Cottage Grove was down 3-1 at the end of the first half, but came back in the third quarter and dominated the fourth frame to secure a 11-6 victory over White Bear Lake, claiming co-ownership of the Suburban East Conference title on Tuesday night at White Bear Lake.

Park (10-3, 7-1) quelched the Bears’ eight-game winning streak with eight minutes left in the third quarter when junior Matt Moreland scored for the Wolfpack. He netted another goal with three minutes remaining in the quarter to tie the game 3-3.

After that, it was all Park. Junior Daniel Beck scored with 1:38 in the third quarter to give the Wolfpack a 4-3 lead.

Moreland finished with three goals for Park, and junior Grant Glazier’s two scores topped his own school record as he reached 70 goals on the season. Senior Gavin Foote’s goal with a minute left sealed the deal for the Wolfpack.

Bears senior Jack McKeague scored twice and added an assist. Juniors Jared Lueck, Kyle Preslaski, Jace Goudreau, and senior Jacob Leclair, also scored.

Despite the Bears (9-4, 7-1) losing to the Wolfpack, the teams share the conference championship given they finished with identical league records. White Bear Lake has won or shared the Suburban East title four times in the last six years. Park had never won it previously.
