Despite the Heiting twins combining for six scores, the Raptors lost the Section 3 championship to the Raiders.

The Section 3 title was just a fraction of what was at stake in Thursday night’s barrage between East Ridge and Cretin-Durham Hall.

Each team chased their own versions of redemption.

Cretin-Derham Hall (14-2) lost 20-2 to Eden Prairie in last season’s state quarterfinals, and it lost again to Maple Grove in the consolation game. The Raiders weren’t going down this year without a fight.

East Ridge (12-4) was drowned by the Raiders earlier this season in a 14-7 tussle. And last season, Cretin-Derham Hall stripped the Raptors of having the opportunity to participate in their first state tournament appearance after East Ridge suffered an 11-10 section semifinal heartbreaker.

But the Raiders, who are ranked No. 9 in the state coaches’ poll, clinched the section crown and their chance at state tournament redemption in a 14-9 decision against East Ridge.

Senior Bree Osborn came out of the gates with her hair on fire, scoring within the first 60 seconds and heading a five-goal streak for the Raiders: the cushion they needed to maintain a lead throughout the entire game.

East Ridge didn’t go down without a fight, though. With 14 minutes left in the first half, junior Chloe Heiting punched back. She netted back-to-back goals, which pivoted the momentum their way: pushing the Raptors into a three-goal run and putting the game within one at the start of the second half.

Sophomore Anne Marie Rhoda’s nerves were spinning, but like a windmill, she channeled it into energy which led her to score four goals. She said that’s what everyone did.

“We just channeled our nerves somehow, and went out super hard,” she said.

Cretin-Derham Hall’s first-year coach Joe Moss has another idea as to why the girls kept their composure.

The secret? Sisterhood. They’ve got an 8.5-by-11’’ contract tucked inside their ball bucket to prove it. The laminated paper reads “G-LAXERS AT CDH PROMISE TO… Maintain the bonds of sisterhood”, along with four other team-wide promises, including positivity, accountability, respect and hard work -- all of which coach Joe Moss is proud to say the girls kept.

“All these girls sacrifice stardom [to win],” he said. “They care more about each other than anything.”

Moss also knew that East Ridge wanted to win. Bad. So he made sure to switch up the offense and shift the defense to keep them guessing.

East Ridge coach Luke Beaudoin, like Moss, is proud of his girls for sticking together as family. He’s more disappointed with the seniors he’ll lose than the game they lost. He’s been coaching them for three years.

“There are some big shoes to fill next year,” he said.

First Report

Cretin-Derham Hall (14-2) shut down rival East Ridge (12-4) for the second time this season in a 14-9 conquest en route to claiming the Section 3 title Thursday evening at East Ridge High School.

Senior Bree Osborne came out of the gates with a shot that slipped past the the Raptors goalie within the first minute, and the rest was history, culminating in the Raiders, who are ranked No. 9 in the state coaches’ poll, qualifying for the state tournament.

Four consecutive Cretin-Derham Hall goals followed Osborne’s before the Raptors made the board with junior Chloe Heiting’s slip-in. Heiting netted another goal just four minutes later. Then, her sister, Grace Heiting, headed another momentum-shift which forced the Raiders to curb the Raptors with just a two-goal lead at halftime.

In the second half, Alyssa Wallace threatened the Raiders’ lead even more, scoring within the first two minutes to make it 6-5. But sophomores Olivia Crawford and Anne Marie Rhoda answered quickly for the Raiders.

Although Cretin-Derham Hall had to play tug-of-war to maintain its lead, it never disappeared.

Rhoda finished with three tallies for the Raiders, and Crawford netted three for a hat trick. Five additional players scored, including junior Megan Reis and senior Caleigh Tschida, who each netted two.

The Heiting twins each finished with hat tricks for the Raptors.
