The girls’ lacrosse state tournament bracket has been released, and there were no surprises in the field.

All eight teams that qualified for state were the No. 1 seeds in their sections tournaments. This doesn’t provide any Cinderella stories, but it will assure that the eight best teams are playing to decide which is worthy of the state title.

Eden Prairie will defend its state title as the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Eagles have made the tournament every year since 2007, winning the championship four times, including the last two years. They are led by Naomi Rogge, who was named the Player of the Year by the girls’ lacrosse coaches association on Tuesday. She led the team with 90 points in the regular season, and 22 points in the section playoffs. The Eagles will play the eighth-seed Blaine in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The No. 2 seed in the tournament is Prior Lake, a team that has seen success in the past few years. The Lakers made their first appearance in the tournament two seasons ago, and they’ve been back every year since. In their inaugural state trip, they lost in the quarterfinals. Last year, they lost in the semifinals. The Lakers hope to continue their progression in the tournament this year to have a chance at their first state title. The Lakers will play the No. 7 seed Maple Grove in the quarterfinals.

Blake, the third seed, has been to the tournament every year since 2007, just like Eden Prairie. However, the Eagles have disrupted the Bears’ run of dominance at the state. Before the Eagles won the last two state titles, Blake won six titles between 2008-2014, including five in a row starting in 2010. The Bears lost in the championship game to Eden Prairie a season ago. The only way they could have a rematch this year would be in the championship game once again. The Bears play the sixth-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall in the quarterfinals.

The four seed, Farmington, does not have the successful past of Eden Prairie or Blake, as the Tigers are making their first appearance in the state tournament. The Tigers are led by the dynamic senior duo of Ashley Steffes and Kamryn Corraro.

Steffes led the team with 65 points in the regular season, but Corraro wasn’t far behind, finishing with 64. Steffes had a team-best 32 assists, while Corraro's 49 goals was topped the season scoresheet. The Tigers play the fifth-seed Stillwater in the quarterfinals.
