Senior midfielder talks about his favorite lacrosse experiences

Ben Frye

Mahtomedi midfielder Ben Frye waxes enthusiastic about lacrosse:

Most memorable moment as a high school athlete? Getting the chance to play in the Metrodome my senior year of football for the state semifinals. It was something I had dreamed of since I had been a kid watching the Zephyrs win the state championship in 2005.

First lacrosse memory: Watching my brother’s lacrosse team lose in the state semifinals to Hastings as a fourth-grader.

What makes lacrosse fun? It’s one of the only sports where you can be serious … but also just have fun with your teammates.

Three things that you couldn’t play without: My Zephyr football wristband, a gray undershirt and a Glacier Freeze Gatorade.

Lacrosse is …: One of those sports that you become engulfed in. Once you pick up a stick, it’s hard not to have it in the back of your mind at all times.

Favorite moment in a game: When I am running down on a fast break and I see the play develop with the quick passes, just as I had envisioned it in my head.

One small tip before a big game: Just have fun. This is a high school sport, and we are all just doing it for the love of the game. In 10 years, we won’t remember the scores, but we will remember the experiences, so why not make them the best that we can?

What aspect of practice makes you groan? Defensive drills. I know that I … need to work on my defensive skills, but I enjoy playing offense a lot more. I’m a goal scorer, feeder and a dodger, not a shut-down defender.
