I am working on a U14 field league up in Winnipeg and was wondering if there is a master list of summer tournaments for the Minneapolis area? Any help would be apprecaited as it would be nice to create a team and come down and play. Thx in advance

Mark Erickson ·

Hi Mike. I fell down on getting last year's summer tournaments posted, but promised to do a better job this year. I'll ask around and get something up here soon. Please post an email here or send me one from the MBSLA page linked in the top row navigation.

Looks like the MSHL just approved a new playoff format for football. I know lacrosse is new and doesn't have the clout like football but it would be beneficial for the sport to adopt a variation of this format. http://www.startribune.com/sports/preps/127892913.html?uccb=1313526425005&cr=1

Mark Erickson ·

The MBSLA already does a version of this for their playoffs. As for MSHSL, I don't think a sports' clout has anything to do with it. I think the driving force is sections with several top teams are miffed that only one team can go to state. This would apply very well to lacrosse, but notice that the specific setup for 6A football is for exactly 32 teams - 4 sections of 8 each. Otherwise you end up not having everyone qualify for the playoffs (an idea I heartily support) or get the weird odd numb Read More

MSHSL Idea- How about Seeding the sections each year at Playoff time ·

Is the goal of the State tournament to try to get the 4 best teams to play in the finals or do they just want all areas of the metro to be represented? It appears the that Sections 5 & 6 are loaded with very high quality teams. Example- 4-8 Wayzata trounced Woodbury and Eastview this year playing second teamers in the 4th quarter. Take 15-0 Maple Grove team to down to the last minute in Section quarterfinal. It just seams as thought eh best teams do not make it to state as these sections a Read More

Mark Erickson ·

The goal of the state tournament is for the championship to be decided on the field. As long as everybody has a chance to win out, then it's fair. I don't see the obsession with the importance of when you lose a game, whether in the sections or state. It is highly contingent on your path to the final, but it really doesn't matter. It shouldn't be the most important factor in how you judge a team's season.

reply ·

Sorry for the delay- There is no obsesson with when you win or lose but it is about the kids experience, exposure, recruiting etc. Much weaker teams are advancing to section final games and to state and it does not showcase the best talent or the best games. While lacrosse is still growing it is still easy enough to seed teams or at least reaarange sections. In Football there are just too many teams for this to be feasible but in lacrosse the sport is still small enough for this to be acompli Read More

Todd Villeneuve ·

Does anyone know how a player 5/6 level can get on tournament teams if his team is no longer playing. Mn Soccer has a player board on its site that posts like a help wanted section... any ideas?

Todd Villeneuve ·

No Mark. My idea was if any team is still doing tournaments throughout the summer or next few months and they need a talented player as a pick-up is there a place where posts and pick-ups can be found. The Mn soccer assoc. has a player needs (for lack of a better word) area that they post players needed or players willing to play...

Mark Erickson ·

I directed Todd to the nearest YLM teams (he's from Rochester). But for the general reader, there is no soccer-like "guest player" program in lacrosse. And no try-out 5/6 grade teams that I know of, although there has been a U13 team (MN Chill) that has gone to Vail in the past.

After watching the College Lacrosse games this past weekend, I was able to see the impact of the new college 30 second box rule. For anyone that has a vote in high school rules, PLEASE vote for high school to adopt this as a rule. Removing the 10 second box rule changes the game from a players perspective and allows refs to focus on making the right calls and removes focus from constantly counting.

Mark Erickson ·

I completely agree. I passed this on to MN uber official Harold Buck, but boys' HS rules are maintained by the NFHS. Here is their Boys' Lacrosse page: http://www.nfhs.org/BLacrosse/

I am working on launching the Grand Cities Lacrosse Club with hopes of playing in the Minnesota Boys Scholastic Lacrosse Association North Division in the spring of 2012. Early projections are to field teams at the 7/8 grade level, Junior Varsity, and Varsity. This club is open to players and their families from Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and any surrounding community where there is a kid that wants to be part of it.

I will have more information to release in the next two weeks or so

Just a quick question about summer tournaments. If we wanted to put a 5th/6th grade team in a tournament would that be kids going into 5th and 6th grade the following school year or kids who just completed their 5th and 6th grade year? Thanks!

Mark Erickson ·

Youth Lacrosse Minnesota runs summer leagues. Check out their website at YouthLaxMN.org. Grades are just completed if I remember correctly.

Hey everybody! We live in East Grand Forks and my 15 year old son is just dying to play lacrosse and I think my 12 year old would play too. Problem is there is nothing in the Grand Forks/East Grand Forks area but you do see other kids with lax gear messing around in parks and on field. My 15 y/o has played some with the Fargo group including the tournament in Grand Rapids this past spring and attended practices with the UND Men's Lacrosse Club Team but he wants more. Anybody that reads this, Read More

Hi Brent. Send me an email (on the main community page). We'd love to help you get started forming a club in Grand Forks.
