Girls lacrosse: Blaze wins big in Section 3 opener

By Tom Schardin 05/24/2011, 10:00am CDT

The Burnsville girls lacrosse team had an impressive playoff opener May 23.

The fifth-seeded Blaze wasted little time in putting 12th-seeded Prior Lake into a hole, scoring three quick goals en route to an easy 17-5 home win.

The Blaze (8-6) will advance to the Section 3 quarterfinals Wednesday, May 25 playing at fourth-seeded Bloomington Jefferson (11-2) at 4 p.m.

The Jaguars beat the Blaze 14-7 back in mid-April in frigid temperatures.

Burnsville is a much different team than it was in April when it began the season with 1-4 mark. The Blaze has won five of its last six games, including a 10-9 home win over Lakeville North, ranked No. 4 in the state at time, in its final regular season game May 19.

Other section quarterfinal games May 25 are: top-seeded Bloomington Kennedy versus eighth-seeded Lakeville South, second-seeded Lakeville North versus seventh-seeded Eagan-Rosemount and third-seeded Apple Valley versus sixth-seeded Rochester John Marshall/Lourdes.

The section semifinals are May 31 with the title game June 2.

"(Beating Prior Lake ) was a great way to start off the section tournament," said Blaze coach Sarah Windhorst. "The team's goal is to focus on one game at time. We can not look past anyone."

Sophomore Madii Maas led the Blaze with four goals against Prior Lake , while senior Megan Killmer scored three times and seniors Nicolette Deason and Tristyn Walczak each scored twice.

Ninth-graders Sam Vikstrom, Briita Nelson, Bailey Childs, Kalle LaValle, sophomore Jordan Johnson and junior Megan Koski each scored one goal.

Senior Katie Vinje led in assists with two, while Deason, LaValle, Kosi and sophomore Alexa Pearson each had one.

Sophomore Jaclyn Hinz made 13 saves in goal.
