Minnetonka coach Aaron Olivier thought about calling a timeout. His team was tied with Chanhassen 7-7 with just over 20 seconds left in the game.

But when he saw sophomore Elliot Forst had scooped up the loose ball after the Storm missed a shot, Olivier decided to wait.

"Elliot is 100 percent emotional out there and he's gonna go until he dies," Olivier said. "So when he got that ball, I was thinking about taking a timeout but I wanted to see what Elliot could do with it."

All he did was win the game.

Forst streaked all the way up the left sideline, angled in and scored to give the Skippers an 8-7 victory over previously unbeaten Chanhassen, ranked No. 6 by the Minnesota State High School Boys' Lacrosse Coaches Association, at Minnetonka High School on Saturday.

Forst's goal was his second of fourth quarter - his only scores of the game -and helped lock up the Skippers' first win over a top-15 ranked opponent in four chances this season.

"I got about to midfield and didn't see anybody coming at me, so I just kept going," Forst said. "(The defensemen) didn't slide, they stayed on their man and all of the sudden I was like, 'Oh shoot, I'm five yards out.’"

Forst let the ball fly and planted it in the back of the net with just 14 seconds left. He ran over to the sidelines screaming to his coach he'd "fixed his stick".

"He's been working with his stick because that thing has been an ugly wicket for about a month," Olivier said. "It was awesome because he's had real big problems with his stick, so that's a great reward for him."

The theme to the Skippers' 2015 season has been one of getting past big obstacles. Minnetonka (4-3) lost senior captain Tad Utter and junior defenseman Conor Abraham to injuries.

Being without those key players combined with a tough schedule led to the Skippers dropping to 3-3, being outscored 28-9 in losses to Lake Conference rivals Eden Prairie and Wayzata and searching for some type of identity.

Olivier and Forst believe they've found one, especially after the win over Chanhassen (6-1): resiliency.

After starting Saturday's game slow, the Skippers clawed back from a 5-1 deficit to win and have back-to-back one-goal wins after defeating Bloomington Kennedy 5-4 on April 30.

"(Today) was a grinder," Olivier said. "This is a huge win for us because it shows we can compete with the big boys."

Forst was all grins after his clutch game against the big boys on Saturday, both happy and relieved to have not only his shot back, but perhaps the Skippers' season.

"Earlier this season, I was throwing a little wild. I think it's clicked," Forst said. "I think I found where it's supposed to go now."
