Carly Fedorowski set career highs in points and goals as she scored six times and added an assist in Stillwater’s 16-8 road win over Lakeville North Thursday night.
The senior found the back of the net just two minutes and 35 seconds into the game to give the Ponies a 2-1 lead. She then scored the following two goals off bounce shots to notch a hat trick just eight and a half minutes into the game.
Stillwater coach Rick Reidt said Fedorowski has developed into one of the top players on the team in her third year starting, and the Linwood University commit's competitive nature and peripheral vision sets her apart from the competition.
“She can see people coming up from behind her, she’s able to pass the ball and is an accurate shooter," Reidt said.
With precise aim and a sixth sense for defenders, Fedorowski looks to lead the Ponies to their sixth consecutive state tournament after graduating a core group of 11 seniors from last year.
“We’re super young,” Federowski said. “We had plays set up and the young girls stepped up (tonight). I think we have the talent and skill this year to make it just as far.”
As a sophomore, Fedorowski tallied a hat trick and scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 2014 third place game against Apple Valley, Stillwater's best finish in the state tournament.
After last year’s 16-15 overtime loss to eventual champion and perennial power Eden Prairie, the expectations continue to rise for Stillwater’s program, one which has been a staple in Minnesota girls' lacrosse.
A philosophy of getting better day-to-day, no matter the success of the program, continues to be at the core of how the Ponies operate, especially with a youthful roster.
“We try to focus on one game at a time, because we have a young team that’s beginning to fill the roles of those seniors from last year,” Reidt said.
