Senior attacker Donavon Dempsey scored two goals and dished out eight assists to lead Lakeville South to a 17-9 win over Northfield on Friday night in the Section 1 semifinals at Lakeville South.

Junior attacker Burk Substad scored a game-high six goals for the No. 2-seeded Cougars (9-6), who tallied six goals in the first quarter and five in the third en route to the victory.

Lakeville South assistant coach Hank Marotske is filling in for head coach Tim Bohmert in the postseason, and said that the Cougars were well prepared for the Raiders.

“We knew it was going to be a tough battle,” Marotske said. "Northfield's very athletic, and they have a couple of really talented players. We just had to stick to our game plan."

That game plan centers on Dempsey, a University of Detroit Mercy commit, finding his teammates and distributing the ball in key situations.

“Donavon’s a consummate team player,” Marotske said. "He's not selfish, he moves the ball and he finds open guys.

Marotske added that defenders always have to honor Dempsey because he makes plays simply by having possession of the ball.

David Byers totaled three goals and five assists, with Sam Bakken adding a hat trick of his own for Lakeville South. Nicholas Petersen scored twice, and Tyler Haroldson added a goal in the win.

Jase Simon led the Raiders (13-2) with four goals, Chase Marlenee and Nick Kvernmo each scored twice and Griffin Loecher notched a goal for No. 3-seeded Northfield.
