Breck vs. Blake

5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 3

With two games called off due to weather conditions and two losses in its first three games, Breck has stuttered to start the season. The good news is there is still plenty of time for the No. 10 Mustangs to get back on the right track.

Breck (1-2, 0-1) has the twinned benefit and struggle of only having two seniors on the team. There is obvious talent and potential for the team to jell over several seasons, but a lack of experience could be a factor in this year's slow start. Junior Eloise Cherian has stepped back into her leading scorer role with eight goals and an assist through three games.

Blake (4-1, 1-0) has never missed a state tournament, incidentally keeping Breck to zero appearances, and it doesn't seem like this year will be the one to break the streak. The No. 3 Bears have lost to only second-ranked Prior Lake (12-9 on April 23), and each of their wins have been by at least seven goals.

Sophie Skallerud has 17 goals through four games, already more than half of her regular-season total from a year ago, and Emma Burke (11 goals, 15 assists) leads the team with 26 points. If that kind of production can continue this week, Blake has a good chance to come out with wins against two top-10 teams and gain real momentum going into the final four games of the season.
