Buoyed by Matt Dowden, who netted four goals, and a core shutdown defense, the Red Knights beat the Zephyrs handedly in a rematch of last year's state semifinal.

With 8:39 remaining in the third quarter on Saturday, it looked as if Mahtomedi had a chance to erase a first-half deficit and keep up with Benilde-St. Margaret’s. The Zephyrs had just scored to make it a two-goal game. But any hope soon dissipated.

First report

Heading into Saturday’s tilt against Mahtomedi, Benilde-St. Margaret’s had not lost a regular season game in two years. That didn’t change Saturday when the Red Knights topped the Zephyrs 9-3 at Mahtomedi High School.

Despite taking three penalties in the opening quarter, Benilde-St. Margaret’s (3-0, 1-0) grabbed a 2-0 lead after 10 minutes. Sophomore attacker Matt Dowden got the Red Knights on the board before finishing with a game-high four goals.

After jumping ahead 4-1 in the second quarter, the Red Knights, ranked No. 3 in the state coaches’ poll, took control in the third, with three different players, including Dowden, finding the back of the net. Red Knights junior goaltender Jack Keller stopped 14 of 17 shots.

Mahtomedi (1-4, 1-1) continued its slow start to the season after advancing to the state semifinals a season ago. Senior midfielders Ryan Pilla and Sam Donna, along with sophomore Levi Lemke scored the Zephyrs’ goals on Saturday. Meanwhile, goaltenders Gustaf Magnusson and Xander Williams combined to make 10 saves on 19 shots.
