Drew Wilson had an easy answer when asked about how he and his Eagan teammates were able to flip a turnover near midfield with less than 10 seconds remaining on the clock into a game-winning goal in a 14-13 victory over Lakeville South at Eagan High School on Tuesday night.

The Eagan boys' lacrosse team has been to three straight state tournaments and they won a state championship in 2017. With a group of players that average nearly 15 goals per game, the Wildcats are accustomed to playing with a quick offense.

"We're a team of fast breaks," Wilson said. "Our coach always likes to push it, and I've always kind of grown into that position."

As Wilson ran down the field, he had the chance to take a glance at the game clock and see how much time remained before the buzzer sounded to end the fourth quarter.

As it turns out, he had enough time even to use a shot fake.

"You've got to throw one in there," Wilson said. "The goalie, he was covering pretty much the whole net. So I had to throw it through the five-hole."

Eagan coach Bob Felter credited Wilson with having good hands and one of the team's hardest shots after watching the senior attackman score the game-winner. Wilson also had a big game last year against Lakeville South, scoring six goals in a 20-7 win.

"It was a great shot because the goalie was right on the pipe and he's a pretty big dude," Felter said.

It was a wild finish for a game that featured two delays in the fourth quarter for a pack of stadium lights going out.

Eagan needed to survive an 11-goal quarter from Lakeville South and two game delays due to field light failures, but Drew Wilson scored with one second remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Wildcats, ranked No. 10 in the state coaches’ poll, a 14-13 victory over the Cougars at Eagan High School on Tuesday night.

Trailing 6-1 after one quarter, Lakeville South (4-1, 2-1) scored 11 goals in the second quarter to pull ahead of its South Suburban Conference foe 12-10 at halftime.

Both teams’ offensive attacks slowed in the second half and went into the fourth quarter tied 12-12. The final period was lengthened by two delays due to one of the field's four stadium light banks going out. But Eagan (4-1, 3-0) broke a 13-13 tie with the last-second goal.

Skyler Rust played a big role in No. 7 Lakeville South's comeback and near victory, scoring four goals in the second quarter. He finished with five goals and assisted on three others.

Ryan Colbert led Eagan with three goals and two assists, and Wilson finished with three goals.
