Wayzata won just three regular-season games this year. This was coming off of making three consecutive state tournament appearances. Multiple factors likely went into the Trojans’ 3-9 start.

One was the team’s schedule. Wayzata coach Chad Herr said the Trojans’ opponents were all tough and competitive. Another was the experience lost to graduation from last season.

“We lost seven seniors, but we lost about 100 goals so that is the important part,” Herr said.

The final factor was an injury to attackman Thomas Seyfert. The junior, who finished with 11 goals and three assists in the section playoffs, missed significant time during the regular season after fracturing his thumb. Seyfert said being off the field was difficult.

“It was really hard watching from the sidelines, so now just the second I step on that field I try to do all I can to help out the team,” he said.

With Seyfert on the field at Irondale High School on Wednesday night, things were clicking for the Trojans as they defeated St. Michael-Albertville 6-4 to win their fourth consecutive Section 7 crown.

First report

Thomas Seyfert’s three goals in the fourth quarter helped Wayzata boys defeat St. Michael-Albertville 6-4 in the Section 8 final at Irondale High School on Wednesday.

The Trojans (7-9) advance to the state tournament for the fourth straight season after Seyfert’s hat trick put Wayzata ahead in a back-and-forth contest.

The Knights (11-4) opened the scoring six minutes into the first quarter when Joey Bennett found the net. The Trojans responded with the next two goals late in the quarter when Brayden Nelson whipped one from deep to beat Knights’ goalie Jace Heibel, who made four saves in the first half. On the other end, Trojans goalie Danny Fraga stopped three.

Maxwell Bedell gave St. Michael-Albertville the 3-2 advantage in the second quarter after scoring twice.

Defense was the theme in the third quarter. When the chances came, Heibel and Fraga made key stops in goal in a scoreless quarter. Then, in the fourth, Seyfert beat Heibel and secured the Trojans spot in the state tournament.
