Frustrated but never flustered, top seed and undefeated Benilde-St. Margaret’s advanced to the semifinals with timely goals.

The Red Knights doubled up Centennial in shots on goal but needed to come back for an 8-4 victory Tuesday at Chanhassen High School.

“The shots weren’t going in the whole game, which was unfortunate,” junior attack Jack VanOverbeke said. “But we found a way.”

Centennial’s Jordan Rodriguez tallied the game’s only goal of the first quarter. Then the Cougars (15-2) built a 2-0 lead on Alexander Brouillet’s goal 37 seconds into the second quarter.

Centennial’s Jordan Rodriguez tallied the game’s only goal of the first quarter. Then the Cougars (15-2) built a 2-0 lead on Alexander Brouillet’s goal 37 seconds into the second quarter.

The Red Knights (17-0) finally fired back, netting four consecutive goals – two by Matt Dowden – for a 4-2 halftime lead.

Dowden completed the hat trick a little more than one minute into the third quarter but the Red Knights couldn’t pull away. They held a 6-3 advantage entering the fourth quarter despite outshooting Centennial 16-5.

Dowden and Jack VanOverbeke later expanded the lead to 8-3 with goals scored just 16 seconds apart.
