The South Suburban has established itself for years as a premier conference in the state, though not necessarily on the strength of Shakopee.

This current group of Sabers is eager to prove it belongs with conference mates competing for section and state titles. Picking up the program’s first win over a perennial top-half team is one way to continue in the right direction.

Shakopee (9-1, 8-1) dominated a rain-soaked game on Tuesday, winning 9-2 at Rosemount (6-4, 5-4). It was an exclamation point to the end of the conference slate that produced a second place finish for the Sabers. Their only blemish was an early season overtime loss to two-time defending state champion and unbeaten rival, Prior Lake.

“Tonight, that was probably our most complete game between offense and defense,” said Shakopee head coach Sean Pollock. “Even our clears. Every part of our game tonight was on. Even in the elements I thought we focused and played a really strong team. That was our first ever win against Rosemount and the boys are really excited and proud of that.”

First Report

Shakopee notched its first win against Rosemount in program history Tuesday night.

The Sabers did it in style, knocking off the host Irish 9-2 in a rainy South Suburban Conference finale.

Sophomore attack Linus Toward is up to 46 goals on the season after a hat trick. Junior midfielder Tyrus Laden scored the Sabers’ first two goals in the opening minutes to help build a 4-0 halftime lead. Luke Whitbeck also scored twice and had an assist.

Weston Brosam was the winning goalie. The sophomore and his defense held Rosemount to a season low of two goals, which was previously five.

Rosemount’s leading scorer, junior attack Chase Tuccitto, ended the shutout with a goal early in the third quarter. Senior midfielder Brady Johnston tallied the Irish’s other goal.

Shakopee (9-1, 8-1) already clinched second place in the conference going into the game. Rosemount (6-4, 5-4) will finish as high as third place if Lakeville North (7-5, 5-3) loses to Eastview later this week (3-6, 3-4). Rosemount has a head-to-head victory over Lakeville North.
