A slow start did not matter for the Mahtomedi boys’ lacrosse team in a 9-5 win at Irondale Friday. The win might be a preview of changes the Zephyrs offense will make this season.
Irondale led the season-opener 2-0 after the first 12 minutes of play in a game where the temperatures hovered near the freezing mark.
However, The Zephyrs broke a 3-3 tie in the third quarter with a six-score outburst, building the four-goal lead that lasted until the final horn.
Mahtomedi’s offense looked much different than a season ago when then seniors Levi Lemke and EJ Charpentier combined to score 107 goals in just 16 games.

It took more than one quarter to warm up, but a deep Mahtomedi offense brought it with a 9-5 win at Irondale on Friday.
On a cold day with temperatures just below freezing, the Zephyrs trailed 2-0 after the first 12 minutes of play. With a 3-3 tie at the half, Mahtomedi scored six times in the third quarter to build the four-goal lead it held for the rest of the game.
Oskar Magnusson scored two goals in the third quarter for Mahtomedi, with Jack Zell, Michael Robinson, Eric Granec and Eric Buttke also adding to the offensive outburst.
Connor Kvaal and Sam Zupfer each scored twice to lead the Irondale offense.
