The Spartans had multiple contributors on the score sheet in their win over the Eagles.

When the Orono starting lineup was being introduced prior to the Spartans’ game against Bloomington Kennedy, many of the players were eighth or ninth graders. There was even a seventh-grader.

Looking at the roster, the youth of Orono is obvious. However, these younger players aren’t backing down from the spotlight. They are leading the squad on both ends of the field and have produced positive results, including Tuesday’s 19-8 win against the Eagles.

Eight of the players who suited up for the Spartans (6-6, 4-3) on Tuesday were a ninth-grader or younger. That is compared to a total of eight juniors and seniors on the Orono roster.

First Report

Nine different players tallied goals for Orono as the Spartans defeated Metro West Conference foe Bloomington Kennedy 19-8 on Tuesday at Pesonen Stadium at Orono High School.

The Eagles (7-5, 2-4) had an early lead thanks to their two top scorers — Susan Monson and Kaysawn Carlson. Carlson had the two of the first three Bloomington Kennedy goals while Monson tallied a team-best five goals, putting her at 83 goals this season.

Orono (6-6, 4-3) took the lead and built on that with a punishing offense approach that featured numerous scorers. Sophomore midfielder Lila James led the push early as she garnered a hat trick in the first half.

James was one of seven Spartans with multiple goals. Dylan Collins, James and Macy Rasmussen registered at least three goals in the win.

With the high-powered Orono attack, Bloomington Kennedy sophomore goaltender Eva Karjalahti faced plenty of pressure and stopped eight shots. Spartan goaltender Ella Farrell finished with 11 saves in the win.
