After a brutally long winter, excitement was high for the lacrosse season to start on a day that saw the temperature comfortably stay in the 80s.

That excitement was dampened quickly for Maple Grove on Thursday night, as Centennial scored two goals in the game’s opening two minutes.

“The thing that was different about this group that I haven’t seen in years past is they didn’t lose it,” Maple Grove coach Haley Corradi said.

The Crimson certainly didn’t lose it, as they were leading 3-2 seven minutes later. By the final horn, they had a season-opening 11-6 win against a Northwest Suburban Conference rival.

First Report

Maple Grove opened its season with a win on home turf against Northwest Suburban Conference foe Centennial on Thursday night.

The first half started at a frantic pace. After Peyton Brezny made an early save (one of her six), Ella Weist and Ella O’Hearn scored two times in 19 seconds to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

The Crimson (1-0, 1-0) responded with three unanswered goals — scored by Ella Olson, Jayde Isaacson and Sosi Van Wyk — to take the lead seven minutes later.

The goals kept coming, as Weist scored her second 90 seconds later to tie the game again.

The game slowed down from there, as it took more than six minutes for either team to score again. It was Leah Muscatello that broke the deadlock and gave the Crimson the lead once again.

Callie Cody scored off a rebound after a kick save from Emma Crater (who finished with six saves) to tie the game once again. That was short lived, as Hadley Kudla scored 35 seconds later to give the Crimson the lead. Olson’s second goal made it 6-4 Maple Grove at halftime.

The Crimson carried that momentum into the second half, as Olson finished off her hat trick less than three minutes into the half. They added two more goals before Noelle Hemr buried a penalty shot to get the Cougars (0-1, 0-1) back on the board. A flurry of goals late resulted in an 11-6 win for the Crimson.
