The highly anticipated early season matchup between Prior Lake and Benilde-St. Margaret’s was nothing short of an offensive showcase.
However, the goals came in separate spurts for the No. 1- and No. 3-teams in this week’s Minnesota State High School Boys' Lacrosse Coaches Association state poll.
A combined effort from senior Carsen Brandt and junior Gus Bell saw each of the players rack up four goals and one assist. The duo helped spur on a dominant first half for the Red Knights (5-0) that had them up 9-4 at halftime.
From there, the away team was able to hold off a second half push from the Lakers (0-2) for a final score of 15-9 on Thursday night at Dan Patch Stadium.
After scoring nine goals in the first two quarters, Benilde-St. Margaret’s hung on to its multi-goal lead the rest of the way. The Red Knights had to hold off a late charge by the Lakers though, who looked to be gaining momentum in the third quarter.
Despite trailing for most of the game, Prior Lake (0-2) was able to calm the game down in the second half. The No. 3 team in the latest state rankings managed five goals in the second half, and even cut their deficit to three at one point. However, a late surge by Benilde-St. Margaret’s (5-0) meant they were going to cruise to an important 15-9 victory so early in the season.
Neither team was without offense though, as a total of four players scored at least three goals. Gus Bell and Carsen Brandt led the way for the Red Knights, each scoring four and adding an assist. Meanwhile, the Lakers’ Benjamin Mickett (5) led all scorers tonight, copying his performance in his team’s opener on April 25.
