A little more than four minutes into Tuesday night’s game, Clara Gilbert scored on Minnetonka’s first possession of the game. Looking to defeat Edina for the first time since April 21, 2016, the Skippers got off to an ideal start.

However, the Hornets ended any good feelings the Skippers were having when Mia Maxwell scored 12 seconds later after a won draw by Edina. The Hornets continued that pattern for much of the game, as they came away with a comfortable 17-3 win to extend their win streak over their Lake Conference rivals to 10 games.

“The girls were ready coming into it that they knew Tonka would be tough,” Edina coach Kelly Crampton said. “It’s for sure the best that we’ve played this season.”

First report

Edina scored early and often in a 17-3 rout of Lake Conference rival Minnetonka on Tuesday night.

The Hornets, ranked No. 4 in the most recent coaches’ poll, started the game with over three minutes of possession after winning the opening draw, but had nothing to show for it as their first shot on goal was saved by Adison Rothschild. The No. 6-ranked Skippers then went down the field and scored quickly thanks to Clara Gilbert.

That was as good as it was going to get for the Skippers, as Mia Maxwell scored 12 seconds later to tie it up. It was all Hornets from there.

The next time the Skippers scored was through Maria DeMann to cut their deficit to 4-2 with 12:43 left in the first half. Just like after Minnetonka’s first goal, the Hornets responded quickly again, as Kathryn Ewers scored 14 seconds later to make it 5-2.

The Hornets (7-1, 4-0) attack ran through Maxwell, Nicola Santoni and Mary Velner. That trio scored 12 of the Hornets goals and combined to dish out six assists.

Gilbert scored two goals for Minnetonka (7-2, 3-1) while Jordyn Helling provided two assists. Rothschild finished with nine saves.
