As Tyler Davis spoke about Edina’s win on Monday night, a few of his teammates couldn’t help but praise him.

“Best pole in the state!” they said about the defenseman.

“Humbly, I hear it,” Davis, one of three senior captains on the Hornets, said of the praise.

Davis and his fellow defenders deserved that praise on Monday night for allowing just one goal in the entire second half to help lead the Hornets, ranked No. 6 in the most recent coaches’ poll, to an 11-6 win over No. 10-ranked Stillwater.

It took just over one quarter for the Hornets to settle in and shut down the Ponies’ offense though. After taking a 5-1 lead late in the first quarter, the Hornets gave up three consecutive goals to allow the Ponies to cut the deficit to one goal.

First report

Edina put together a strong defensive performance to come away with an 11-6 win against Stillwater on Monday night in Edina.

The Ponies, ranked No. 10 in the most recent coaches’ poll released on May 10, got on the board first thanks to Luke Geisbauer just under three minutes into the game. But the No. 6-ranked Hornets had a swift response as they answered with five goals in just over five minutes.

While momentum was fully in Edina’s favor, the Ponies (8-2, 8-0) then responded with their own run of three consecutive goals on opposite sides of the first quarter horn. The sides traded goals from there, with Cooper Anderson finishing off a hat trick to end the scoring in the first half and give Edina a 7-5 lead heading into halftime.

It could have been worse for the Ponies had it not been for Casey Mork, who made 10 of his 14 saves in the first half.

The Hornets (8-1, 5-0) locked things up in the third quarter, as they didn’t allow the Ponies to score until there was 1:53 to go in the quarter. In the time before that, Drew Stocco assisted two goals and scored one himself to give the Hornets a 10-5 lead.

That strong defensive performance carried into the final quarter, as the Hornets didn’t allow a goal across the entire 12 minutes.

Anderson added his fourth of the game midway through the fourth to help ice the win for the Hornets.
