When Sean Pollock was named coach of the Shakopee boys’ lacrosse team in 2015, the program looked a long way from being a team capable of winning a section championship; the Sabers won two games that season.

Eight years later, Pollock has turned his Sabers into a group that is more than willing and able to win a section championship. Shakopee proved that on Wednesday, defeating top-seeded Chanhassen 11-9 to capture the Section 2 championship and send the Sabers to the state tournament for the first time in program history.

First Report

On the road for the section final for the third consecutive year, Shakopee avenged two prior losses to Chanhassen with an 11-9 win to earn its first trip to the state tournament in school history.

Shakopee (13-3, 6-1) built a lead in the first half, leading by as many as four goals in the first quarter. One big key for the Sabers was taking advantage of Chanhassen penalties. Shakopee scored two of its first four goals with a man advantage.

The Sabers took the lead with eight different players scoring goals in the win. Zane Orchard and Landon Toward each had multi-goal games, with Toward tallying a hat trick.

Chanhassen (14-2, 5-1) attempted a comeback and did end up tying the game at one point. Carter Van Holland led the way with five goals for the top-seeded Storm.

Shakopee held off a late push by Chanhassen thanks to goalie Weston Brosam. Besides scoring a goal himself, he stopped 11 shots in the win. Storm goalie Grant Penttinen finished with 20 saves.
