A desperation heave from midfield, a lucky bounce off the stick of Cretin-Derham Hall goaltender Eddie Kielkopf and an improbable goal with two seconds left in regulation extended Eagan's 2023 season but it couldn't save it. 

Griffin Joas' goal off the stick of the Raiders' goaltender tied Thursday night's Section 3 boys lacrosse championship game at 8-8 and sent the game into overtime. But it was Joey Henningsgard's goal 90 seconds into the fourth overtime that lifted Cretin-Derham Hall to a 9-8 victory that sent the Raiders to next week's state tournament and sent the Wildcats to their first loss in seven games and out of state championship contention.

The end-of-regulation goal seemingly gave Eagan, seeking its first state tournament berth since it won a state title in 2018, all the momentum heading into overtime. But the Raiders' defense held on long enough for Henningsgard's goal to clinch the victory. Cretin-Derham Hall (10-6) had lost its last two regular season games but enters the state tournament on a three-game win streak.

Louie Bailey had four goals and Jack Murphy added two for the Raiders. Joas had two goals and an assist and Riley Paulus added two goals for the Wildcats, whose season ended at 10-6.
