Benilde-St. Margaret's (boys) and Blake (girls) have sights set on a third consecutive crown

Meghan Bauer (11) and her Blake teammates are pursuing their third consecutive girls' lacrosse state title.

1. EYEING THREE-PEAT

Benilde-St. Margaret's (boys) and Blake (girls) are not only the defending state champions, but both have their sights set on a third consecutive crown. Benilde-St. Margaret's is seeking its fourth title -- the Red Knights also won in 2007 when the sport first became recognized by the MSHSL. Blake has appeared in all five championship games, winning three and finishing second twice.

2. HORNETS BEGIN NEW ERA

Edina's boys' program has never advanced to the state tournament but is coming off its first losing season since 2005. The Hornets will look to move up in the Lake Conference standings as a new era begins with a young team under first-year coach Travis Wells. He was a captain at Notre Dame and played on its Final Four team in 2001. Wells previously coached at Minnetonka.

3. TEAMS KEEP CLIMBING

The number of boys' and girls' teams playing at the MSHSL level continues to increase each year. There are 57 boys' teams (up from 54 in 2011) and 63 girls' squads (up from 59 in 2011) participating in the sport this year.
