Eagles use stellar goaltending, stingy defense to beat Bengals for Section 4 title

Sophomore goaltender Jack Burn stopped 11 shots, and midfielder Makanka Burke scored twice in the second quarter as No. 4 seed Totino-Grace beat No. 3 seed Blaine 5-4 on Thursday, May 31, in the Section 4 championship game at Irondale High School in New Brighton.

The rematch of the 2010 section title game, also won by Totino-Grace, was highlighted by ball control and tight defense for both teams.

Burke's goal with 59 seconds left in the second quarter sparked a 3-0 run for the Eagles (13-3) that put them ahead 5-3 until Blaine's James Warner scored with less than 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Burn's most important saves came with 5 seconds left as Blaine (14-3) was pressing to tie the game with a late shot and a rebound, but the Bengals, making their third straight section championship appearance, were unable to beat Burn during the sequence.

Blaine struggled late in the fourth quarter to gain possession and execute set offensive plays. Despite Warner's late goal, the Bengals routinely ran into active stick checks by the Totino-Grace defense.

Joe Hegedus and Joshua Radjenovich scored 59 seconds apart in the third quarter for the Eagles, who finished as runner-up to Benilde-St. Margaret's at the 2010 state tournament.
