Lacrosse state tournament preview: Bloomington Jefferson boys, Eden Prairie girls are top seeds

BOYS

What: Quarterfinals Tuesday, semifinals Thursday, championship Saturday

Where: Tuesday at Minnetonka High School, Thursday at Hopkins High School, Saturday at Minnetonka

The big picture: Eden Prairie (13-3) has won two consecutive state titles and enters this year’s tournament as the No. 2 seed. However, the Eagles lost to No. 1 Bloomington Jefferson 9-7 earlier this season. The two teams could meet for a rematch in the state final.

Tournament newcomers: Bloomington Jefferson (16-0), unseeded Maple Grove (15-1) and Blaine (13-3). Maple Grove advanced after Jake Willson’s double-overtime game-winner against Wayzata in the section final.

Players to watch: The tournament features seven of the 12 Minnesota Coaches Association All-Americans: goalkeeper Nick Washuta and defender Crey Bankes (Blake), defender Nate Buswell, attack Ryan Graff and Alex Wilson (Bloomington Jefferson), attack Roman Rohrbach (Lakeview North) and Connar Dehnert (White Bear Lake).

 

GIRLS

What: Quarterfinals Tuesday, semifinals Thursday, championship Saturday

Where: Tuesday at Hopkins High School, Thursday and Saturday at Minnetonka High School

The big picture: Third-seed Blake (14-2) seeks its sixth consecutive title and has defeated No. 1-seed Eden Prairie in four of the past five state title games, including last year. In a matchup on May 22, Blake lost to the Eagles 12-10 in a game in which the Eagles led 7-1 at one point.

Tournament newcomers: Wayzata makes its debut, as does Prior Lake, which defeated Eastview 12-10 in the section championship game.

Players to watch: Blake’s Olivia Nolan recorded 47 goals this year and goalkeeper Hannah Magarian was nominated for the state’s Ms. Lacrosse award. Top goal-scorers include Lakeville South’s Logan Halvorson (61 goals), Armstrong’s Hayley Holdahl (61), Eden Prairie’s Jessica Lagerquist (60), Wayzata’s Haley Schmidt (57), Champlin Park’s Sam Nolan and Hanna Crymble (51 each), and Lakeville South’s Maddy Canney (51).
