There wasn’t any snow in the forecast for Tuesday night, but an avalanche engulfed the Lakeville South lacrosse field nonetheless.

Behind a seven-goal performance from junior midfielder Abby Schaefer, the Cougars cruised to a 17-3 win over Section 1 rival Owatonna, evening their record at 1-1 after a heartbreaking one-score loss to Minnetonka to open the season.

“We knew we had to make certain adjustments to shore it up for the rest of the season,” Lakeville South coach Patrick Crandall said of the lessons learned from their season-opening loss.

If there are any flaws in Lakeville South’s execution, they were invisible for the first 25 minutes of Tuesday’s game as the Cougars, ranked No. 9 in the state coaches’ poll, raced out to a 10-0 lead over the Huskies (1-2).

“We kept focusing on (our) goals for the game, not really worrying about the scoring, but worrying about the small stuff,” Crandall said.

The Cougars kept their offense churning in the second half with seven more scores, but Owatonna was able to break up the shutout by scoring two quick goals 1:43 into the second half.

Taylor Woltman, Laura Ebeling and Sophie Amundson each recorded a goal for the Huskies.

Not having to stress about where goals are going to come from is something of a luxury for Crandall, who has replaced a high-scoring senior class with the aforementioned Schaefer and forwards Ellie Lauderdale and Sam Duncan.

Lauderdale and Duncan each racked up four goals in Tuesday’s win, with Duncan’s performance giving her three more goals than she had all of last season just two games into the 2017 slate.

Duncan, a member of the Lakeville South varsity since her freshman year, attributes at least part of her output to Crandall’s expectations for her scoring.

“He kind of puts it in my ear that I need to take control instead of just passing it off right away,” Duncan said.

Crandall said that he’s been aware of Duncan’s ability to contribute, but that she would need to embrace the role to do so.

“We’ve always known that she’s built up and had the skills, we just need her to step up,” Crandall said, adding that he believes Duncan’s time is now.

"I think she's keen for it. She's ready," Crandall added.
