Bears' section quarterfinal upset of Pioneers follows boys hockey template

“Just like hockey, Just like hockey” was the chant coming from the stands in the closing minutes as a vocal contingent of White Bear Lake fans celebrated the Bears’ 14-10 upset victory over Hill-Murray on Thursday, May 26, in the Section 4 quarterfinals at Hill-Murray High School in Maplewood.

No. 6-seeded White Bear Lake’s victory over Hill-Murray, the No. 3 seed and ranked No. 10 in the Lax Hub’s final state rankings, was reminiscent of the Bears’ shocking upset of the Pioneers in early March in a boys hockey section final.

“It was definitely on everyone’s mind,” White Bear Lake coach Brandon Husak said. “All the players are extremely aware of the rivalry between the two schools.”

White Bear Lake trailed 10-8 heading into the fourth quarter. The Bears (10-4) scored six unanswered goals in the final 12 minutes to secure the victory over the Pioneers (11-3).

Senior attackman Brady Haider scored five goals and senior goaltender Jack Ramert made 15 saves for White Bear Lake, which advances to play No. 2-seeded Mounds View on Tuesday, May 31, at at 7 p.m. in the section semifinals at Mounds View High School in Arden Hills.

Mounds View beat White Bear Lake 8-7 in overtime during the regular season.
