Eagan has battled adversity all season. Whether it be injuries, replacing the 12 seniors who graduated from last season’s state championship team, or having key players on offense go down with injuries. On Thursday, the Wildcats had no one to blame but themselves for the early obstacles they had to hurdle.

First Report

With the game tied at 5 at halftime, Eagan came out in the second half and turned Thursday’s South Suburban Conference tilt into a blowout as the Wildcats scored seven unanswered goals to knock off Lakeville North 15-9 at Lakeville North High School. The win gave Eagan (8-3, 8-1) the South Suburban Conference crown.

Senior midfielder Tate Sundberg led the way for the Wildcats, ranked No. 3 in the state coaches’ poll, with two second-quarter scores to keep pace with the No. 8 Panthers in the first half.

In the second half, a multitude of Wildcats — including sophomore attackman Damien Schultz who opened the scoring 11 seconds into the third quarter — blew the game open. His second goal of the third quarter finished off a quarter in which Eagan outscored Lakeville North 6-0.  Schultz finished with two goals and two assists to be among five Wildcats with multiple goals.

The Panthers (8-5, 7-2) got off to a good start thanks to senior midfielder Scott Sather. He tallied each of Lakeville North’s first two goals in the opening quarter and finished with three scores on the night. Sather’s third goal came in the Panthers’ last-ditch effort to come back as Lakeville North cut the Eagan lead to as little as four goals in the game’s final quarter.

Wildcats senior goaltender Jack Courington picked up the win and helped keep the Panthers off the scoreboard with 16 saves. Lakeville North senior goalie Joe McKernon made 12 saves.
