Blake girls are No. 1 again; B-SM boys are back to defend their title

There is a given when it comes to the state lacrosse tournament — Blake is going to be the No. 1 seed in the girls’ field.

The Bears earned that recognition for the fifth consecutive year. In their previous four trips, they were crowned state champion twice (2008 and 2010) and were the runner-up the other two years (2007 and 2009).

On the boys’ side, defending state champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s earned the No. 1 seed. The Red Knights also won the state title in the inaugural season (2007). Here’s a capsule look at the teams playing in the state tournament:

BOYS

Tuesday and Thursday

At Chanhassen High School

Semifinals: No. 1 seed Benilde-St. Margaret’s (16-0) vs. No. 4 Burnsville (11-6), 6 p.m. Tuesday; No. 2 Eden Prairie (14-2) vs. No. 3 White Bear Lake (12-4), 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Final: 8 p.m. Thursday.

Benilde-St.Margaret’s:
The Red Knights have experience on their side, being the only team back from last year’s field when they established a state tournament record for fewest goals allowed (seven) in the two games. Junior attacker Will Hoesley ignites the offense with 76 points (63 goals and 13 assists). Senior attacker Taylor Topousis is headed to Dartmouth.

Burnsville: The Blaze avenged three regular-season setbacks to win its first section championship. Burnsville will have to make it four to reach the state title tilt, having lost to Benilde-St. Margaret’s 15-5 in the season opener.

Eden Prairie: The Eagles, like Burnsville, were beaten by Benilde-St. Margaret’s 10-6. Twin brothers Matt (30 goals and 18 assists) and Mitch Hugdahl (28 goals and 19 assists) pace Eden Prairie’s attack.

White Bear Lake: The Bears are the unknown in the four-team field. They didn’t face any of the other three entrants over the course of the season. Senior attacker Brady Haider enters the tourney with 36 goals.

GIRLS

Wednesday and Friday

Semifinals: No. 1 seed Blake (14-0) vs. No. 4 Bloomington Jefferson (14-2), 6 p.m. Wednesday; No. 2 Eden Prairie (14-1) vs. No. 3 Stillwater (14-2), 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Blake: The Bears own 14-12 and 20-9 victories over Eden Prairie and Stillwater, respectively. Junior midfielder Meghan Bauer (63 goals and 37 assists) has 100 points on the season. Senior attacker Hillary Crowe has netted 45 goals.

Bloomington Jefferson: The Jaguars are making their first state tournament appearance, having upset crosstown-rival Kennedy 12-6 en route to the Section 3 title. Senior forward Elizabeth Wittenborg is their leading scorer with 32 goals and 40 assists.

Eden Prairie: The Eagles are making their fifth consecutive appearance, winning the crown in 2007 and 2009. Junior midfielder Christine Easton leads the offense with 89 points (71 goals and 18 assists).
