Wayzata, winner of the past two Section 8 championships, had a strong reputation entering Wednesday’s section final against Elk River/Zimmerman.

The Trojans hadn’t lost a game to a section opponent in three years and, for the first time since 2015, earned the top seed in the playoffs.

First Report

Andrew Sahli scored five goals and added an assist to push Wayzata to its third straight Section 8 title following a 16-2 rout of Elk River/Zimmerman in the section final Wednesday afternoon at Park Center High School.

Sahli scored the game’s opening goal, while teammate Thomas Seyfert followed with a first-quarter goal. Elk River sophomore Talon Heath scored with five seconds left in the opening quarter to bring the Elks within one.

Then, Sahli broke the game open with three goals in the second quarter. Brayden Nelson also netted a pair of goals to help the Trojans (13-3) take a 7-1 lead at halftime. Nelson finished the game with three goals and two assists.

Wayzata attackman Brooks Hanson also notched a hat trick in the third quarter. Heath netted the Elks’ other goal in the third quarter.

Trojans goalie Danny Fraga made five saves for the win. Elk River (12-3) goalie Cody Simon stopped 11 shots.
