Boys' lacrosse: Prior Lake's third-quarter surge too much for Minnetonka

Trailing 6-5, the Lakers scored four consecutive goals after halftime to regain a lead they would not relinquish.

Prior Lake senior Bennet Holst called winning a boys’ lacrosse state tournament championship two years ago a once in a lifetime experience.

Turns out he gets another chance.

A dominant third quarter Thursday in the state semifinals sends the Lakers back to the title game. No. 2 seed Prior Lake dispatched No. 3 Minnetonka 13-11 at Chanhassen High School.

Lightning delayed the game’s start by a little more than an hour. Later, Minnetonka’s 6-5 halftime lead got washed away by a flood of Prior Lake goals.

The Lakers (16-2) roared out of the break with four unanswered goals. Holst started the comeback, followed by goals from Benjamin Jung, Luke Bloedow and senior John Leffler’s third of the night.

“We’ve been a second half team all year,” Holst said.

Minnetonka coach Aaron Olivier said his team shared that identity all season before faltering Thursday.

“It kind of unraveled,” Olivier said. “The big game we played [Tuesday] in the heat and losing the anchors of our defense [Elliot Ische and Josh Luedtke] caught up with us. We got caught ball-watching a little bit. Credit to Prior Lake, they put their foot on the gas.”

Down 5-1 in the second quarter, Minnetonka (15-3) roared back to take its halftime lead with five goals in less than eight minutes. Junior Grant Brunsvold tallied the final two goals of the surge.
